The author deftly showcases the struggle of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old forced to abandon her home and fight for her life in a bloodsport meant to satisfy a post-apocalyptic world. Along the way, she bonds with another "tribute" to the Hunger Games, a smart, tender boy named Peeta Mellark, while pining to be back at home with her best friend, the independent and politically outspoken Gale Hawthorne.
